Our Stay at Sandals Montego Bay: What You Should Know Before You Go

There’s something different about landing in Jamaica. The air changes first. Then the pace changes. And before long, you realize nobody is in a hurry except the people who just got off the plane.
During our recent stay at Sandals Montego Bay, we wanted to experience more than just the resort. We wanted a mix of relaxation, local culture, excursions, food, and the small moments that make travel memorable. From rafting down the Martha Brae River to eating fresh jerk chicken by the beach, Jamaica delivered exactly that.

Arriving at Sandals Montego Bay
Once we arrived in Jamaica, transportation coordination was smooth, and the Sandals representatives directed us straight to the Sandals desk before boarding the shuttle to the resort.
One thing we appreciated immediately was how much information the staff provided upfront. They explained:
Restaurant access
Reservation requirements
Shuttle transportation between resorts
Excursion booking options
Entertainment schedules
One of the biggest perks is that guests at Sandals Montego Bay also have access to Sandals Royal Caribbean through the complimentary shuttle service.
The Food: What We Actually Enjoyed Most
The resort has multiple restaurants, but honestly, some of our favorite moments came from simply talking with the staff and asking questions.
One example was Soy Sushi. We ended up getting a volcano roll that was not even listed on the menu because one of the chefs created it for us personally after we chatted with the team.
That became one of the biggest lessons from this trip: Talk to the staff. Ask questions. The experience becomes much more personal when you do.
And if you visit, make sure you stop by the Jerk Shack. The jerk chicken and fish in foil were absolutely worth it.
The Beach, Pools, and Atmosphere
One thing I appreciated about the resort was the balance. There was activity if you wanted it, but plenty of quiet spaces to relax as well.
The beach had:
Open lounge chairs
Clear water
Water sports
Volleyball
Vendors selling souvenirs and essentials right on the beach
And yes, the planes really do fly overhead regularly because the airport is nearby. But surprisingly, it was more entertaining than disruptive. People actually waved at the planes passing over the beach.
The swim-up suites and ocean views were beautiful, and the resort grounds felt lively without feeling overcrowded.
Our Martha Brae River Rafting Experience
One of the highlights of the trip was rafting on the Martha Brae River.
The experience was much more than a raft ride. We learned about the history and legend of Martha Brae while exploring herb gardens, local craftsmanship, and Jamaican culture.
One of the things I enjoyed most was talking with the locals. The conversations felt genuine and gave us insight into everyday life, work culture, and humor in Jamaica. Those moments often become more memorable than the excursions themselves.
Things We Learned During the Trip
A few practical things stood out during our stay:
Not every restaurant requires reservations
Some breakfast locations changed from what we originally expected
Walkout rooms and room categories matter, so confirm details before arrival
The beach vendors are convenient if you forgot essentials
Excursions can add a completely different layer to your resort experience
Most importantly, Jamaica feels best when you stop trying to schedule every minute.
Final Thoughts on Sandals Montego Bay
One, we're going back! Jamaica gave us a mix of relaxation, culture, food, humor, music, and connection that felt authentic from beginning to end.
And while luxury resorts are beautiful, some of the best moments came from simple conversations, local experiences, and slowing down enough to actually enjoy where we were.
This trip was only a small glimpse of what Jamaica has to offer, but it definitely will not be our last visit.
If you’ve visited Jamaica before, I’d love to hear your favorite part of the island.
And if Jamaica is on your travel list, hopefully this gave you a realistic look at what to expect from Sandals Montego Bay and beyond.
